Modern life can feel like a constant juggling act. In particular, women face mounting pressure to excel in every area of life—careers, relationships, personal growth, and self-care—all while making it look effortless. The stress is real, and it's widespread.
Recent studies show us a concerning trend. Roughly 53% of women report higher stress levels than in previous years. Women also consistently experience more stress than men. These high levels of stress can chip away at our confidence and overall well-being.
What if there was a simple but effective way to fight back? Enter personal, grounding affirmations—an approachable, powerful tool for mental strength and emotional balance. Practicing grounding affirmations is an incredibly effective method for easing stress over time while helping us feel more true to ourselves.
The Science of Positive Self-Talk
Affirmations aren't just feel-good phrases. These short, positive statements are proven to help overcome self-doubt and negative and anxious thought patterns. Simply put: they're an evidence-based method for changing how we think. The secret is in our brain’s neuroplasticity — the ability to rewire themselves through consistent practice.
When practiced intentionally, affirmations help us:
Manage stress more effectively
Strengthen our self-worth
Nourish a growth mindset
Increase our emotional resilience
Affirmation practices are simple, grounding routines that incorporate more self-compassion into our lives, which is crucial to our overall well-being. With more self-compassion, we increase our emotional strength and feel more secure in ourselves.
3 Steps to Creating Daily Affirmations for Grounding Ourselves
The beauty (and challenge!) of affirmations is that they’re the most powerful when they’re personal. There is no right way to make your own affirmation, but it’s helpful to have a framework you can build from. Here are some steps to craft grounding affirmations that are true to you:
Find Your Inspiration: Look beyond cookie-cutter statements. Draw from music, poetry, or other people you admire. One of my favorite pioneers in this area is the affirmation artist, Toni Jones. Toni’s music is full of empowering lyrics, one of my favorites being:
Rest and relaxation are productivity, and I am normalizing that in my life.
Keep a journal or a note on your phone to keep track of compelling ideas as you come across them. You never know when inspiration may strike!
Make it Personal to your Journey: Your affirmations should feel true to you. If broad statements feel disingenuous, get specific. Let’s rephrase the common affirmation, “I am capable of achieving my goals.” You could shift this by saying, “I am always growing,” or “I am taking steps toward my goal.” Can you feel the difference in that phrasing? Let your affirmation gently ground you in the moment right now while nudging you toward your future.
Speak Actively and in the Present Tense: Start your affirmation with "I am..." or "I have..." instead of “I will…” or “I want…” Use words that reflect who you are right now. For example, you could reframe “I will be kinder to myself” to “I speak to myself as a close friend” or “I am gentle with myself.” This roots you in the present moment.
Affirmation Examples to Inspire You
Try these on for size, and adapt them as needed to fit your journey:
"I trust myself deeply."
"My feelings are valid."
“I treat myself with kindness.”
“I embrace change.”
"My progress matters more than perfection."
"I choose peace over stress."
“I am enough, just as I am.”
The Power of Your Voice
Remember, affirmations aren’t just empty words—they are a declaration of your values, your humanity, and your self-worth. Write them on your mirror. Whisper them in your meditation. Shout them in the car if you want. The key is consistent, heartfelt repetition. Affirmations are a small act of self-love that can snowball to profound changes in how you view yourself and the world around you.
